Things started out well with this hand nr 47:
I got into another confrontation a bit later in hand 67. I would appreciate any thoughts on this one:
After this hand I was seriously card dead. I'm sure I missed spots but... Here are my final 100 hands. I fold more or less all:
I'll review these later. It was a long night with nothing to show.

Well done, Roland, with pretty lousy cards -- UL that you used up all your mojo in the private game! I was watching out of the corner of my eye and happened to catch all of the key hands, including hands 47 and 67 and the QQ, 87o (n1!), 65s (n2!) and final KTo hand. I was wondering what you had on hand 67 -- I'm guessing the BB had an 8. I don't know what the UTG player's table image was but raising to 2400 pre-flop ("Is there any other way to play freakin' jacks?", lol) and looking to isolate him all-in for 5000 was worth considering. Flat calling made a call by the BB much more likely and I don't really want to play a 3-handed pot with jacks. Monday morning quarterbacking but hands 85, 92 and 96 are hands I might have pulled the trigger on. Your play looked pretty solid though -- you just need some cards next time!
ReplyDeleteThanks benko! I had a good feeling about the tourney since it started so well. Yes, on the JJ hand I was kicking myself for not raising pf. I was trying to control the pot size. I figured if low cards came my hand would be good, but the board just kept getting worse. The bb calling w A8, K8s 89, or 78s all seemed possible and the straight possibility on the river made me fold.
ReplyDeleteI hate shoving Axo type hands utg when I still have a stack. It seems you typically are getting called by a better A. I would rather shove sc even low ones. Well, I had gone so long that I kept expecting to pick up a hand (or at least a decent situation). I waited too long to put it mildly. Thanks for your support though :)
Roland
Agree with your comment about shoving Axo hands UTG but on hand 85 with an M of 2.2 (which will drop to 1.7 on the very next hand when you hit the BB), I think I would let it fly.
ReplyDeleteI know, I was apparently playing scared hoping to crawl itm. Pretty ugly watching the replay.
ReplyDeleteNext time things will go better let's hope...
Every big tourney above one's usual buy-in level is a major learning opportunity. There's just no substitute for experience -- I would love to have a chance to play in an APPT having bumbled my way through the EPT!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Benko on HH 67, 4x raise to isolate the UTG (I was railbirding up until HH 80 or thereabouts). Of the last 100 hands, I'm playing HH 25, as that is a chance to get ur stack up to 9K and beeing a force again. HH 28 is also worth considering with the blinds about to hit u at 500/1K. Anyways, you recover nicely with QQ in HH 37 and have a stack again. HH43 is worth thinking about a ........ (fill in). The bb guy seems pretty solid (from watching previous hands), so he would really need a monster to call. I didn't check the sb's previous hands tho. Good stuff on the 87o and 45s! HH 85 I'm putting it in here even with only A8s and a minraise from the button. HH 89 woulda been nice if u played (easy to say afterwards! lol). U didn't catch any real cards, so wp with what u had. The dream would be getting cards vs. aggro 7delux7, but you never got them pf. Better luck next time, you'll get it done soon.
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention that I like to play low cards like HH 97 when extremely shortstacked. Since you know you'll get called by bigstacks, they typically hold similar cards to yours if u play 2 high (then typically 1 card can't play). My desperate AI's with hands like 56o normally gives me 2 live cards postflop. Any thoughts on this guys?
ReplyDeleteSpecifically on Hand 97, you can certainly shove with 65o if it's folded to you and hope that you're only up against two overcards (or even better, 22,33 or 44!) but I normally wouldn't call if there's a bet before me and I have zero fold equity (as happened in this hand). Roland makes a related point earlier in the thread about folding Axo OOP because too often you get called by a better ace (or medium pair) and you're a 30% dog. Once your M is really low, though, you can't be too choosy about your cards and I'm just looking to be the first one into the pot (another Harringtonism, I think).
ReplyDeleteHarrington and Moshman point out the necessity to shove atc when folded to you when short stacked. Moshman takes it a step further pointing out that when blinded out with a very short stack, then calling is better because if you win the hand you at least triple up gaining a real chance to continue the game.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, three factors came into play for me during the game. 1. yes, I was a bit scared by the prize size, 2. I would have been happy crawling itm so getting deeper at that point wasn't my priority, 3. I had gone so long without a real hand that I was convinced it was going to be dealt any second. LOL!
Terrible play by me, no excuses. Let's move on to something more positive and let me forget this game :)
